Web4 Sep 2008 · A loose spline that isn't lubricated will wear rapidly and both mating parts will have to be replaced. This is partly due to corrosion (rust) in the splines which causes the fit to deteriorate. It is much worse in a splined shaft than on a keyed shaft.
